‘Ekk Deewana Tha’ to release with two endings

The director of the Prateik-Amy Jackson-starrer will release the film simultaneously with two different conclusions

Ek Deewana Tha is director Gautham Menon’s second attempt to migrate to Bollywood; first one was the R Madhavan-Dia Mirza-starrer, Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein. The response to the trailer of EDT has been lukewarm and even the music (by AR Rahman) hasn’t done much to raise interest in the film. It seems that these developments have given the makers a scare, which is why they thought of a backup plan.
The remake of a hugely successful film, Menon’s own, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, EDT will be simultaneously released with two endings; one which the makers call ‘popular ending’ and the other called ‘director’s cut’. The first question that comes to the mind is, why can’t the popular ending be the director’s cut? What is the point of having two endings to one film? Is it just to make the audience go back into the theatres to catch the alternate ending?

The biggest problem with this is that the makers are subtly giving away the story. In the Tamil version, the boy doesn’t get the girl and in the Telugu version (Ye Maaye Chesaave) they both live happily ever after. So figuring out that the director is offering the Hindi audience both – the Tamil and the Telugu endings is not rocket science. Only if Menon has come up with some unimaginable third ending, will he really manage to surprise the viewers. Which one will you like to watch: the happy-ever-after version or the sad one?
