Katrina Kaif might be a filmmaker’s delight for the kind of item numbers she dishes out. But dance maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj is not happy with her moves
Item numbers sell like hot cakes and item girls of B-town are in tremendous demand. An item number today can safely be credited for pulling a part of the viewers to the theatres. But not everyone is impressed with this trend. Especially, Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj, who has previously choreographed Madhuri Dixit in Dil To Pagal Hai and Devdas and Kamal Haasan in Vishwaroopam. The veteran is quite unhappy with the way dancing in Bollywood is shaping up. What’s more, he doesn’t even consider those hip-shaking numbers to be dance. According to him, heroines today aren’t aware of what real dancing is. “Today’s heroines have no personality and can’t carry a dance on their own shoulders. They are nowhere in the same league as Waheeda Rehman or Meena Kumari and think whatever they do is the right thing,” Birju Maharaj complained.
What’s more, commenting on B-town’s latest item queens Katrina Kaif’s ‘Chikni Chameli’, the maestro said, “Usko naachna nahi, hilna bolte hai (It’s not called dancing, it’s called moving).” We are sure Kat, who until now had received only praises for her number, would like to forward this scathing comment to Chikni Chameli’s choreographer, Mr Ganesh Acharya!
